Cancel a cowswap order before a solver settles it
CoW Swap cancellations can race with solver settlement: learn when off-chain requests work, when on-chain cancellation helps, and how to check order status.

A pending cowswap order remains executable until its cancellation takes effect. That matters because a solver can settle it while your request is being processed. CoW Swap offers an off-chain request and an on-chain transaction; the cowswap choice depends on whether you want to avoid a gas fee or prefer an on-chain invalidation.
Can you cancel a CoW Swap order before settlement?
Yes, if it has not settled yet, but submitting a cancellation does not guarantee it will beat a solver. Off-chain cancellation asks the order book to mark the order invalid, and that request takes time to process. In that interval, the order may still be matched and settled. Once settlement happens on-chain, the trade is final.
For most readers, off-chain cancellation is the practical first choice: it is free and does not require a wallet transaction. Choose on-chain cancellation if you want the order invalidated through a transaction instead, and accept the gas cost. That route still has a race: a solver may settle the order before the cancellation transaction is confirmed.
How do you request a cancellation?
Use the activity panel to find the pending order and choose how to cancel it:
- Open the activity panel from your connected wallet address.
- Find the pending order and select “Cancel order.”
- Choose off-chain for a free request, or switch to on-chain and review the transaction and gas fee.
- Confirm the request or transaction in the interface, then check the order’s status in your activity.
The order is not safe to treat as canceled just because you submitted the request. Look for confirmation that it has been canceled; if it is shown as settled, the swap has already completed.
Which cancellation method should you choose?
Off-chain cancellation is usually the better fit when avoiding a network fee matters and a short processing delay is acceptable. On-chain cancellation gives you a transaction that invalidates the order, but it costs gas and must confirm before settlement to prevent the trade.
- Use off-chain cancellation for a free request through the order book.
- Use on-chain cancellation when you prefer an on-chain invalidation and accept the fee.
- Check the order’s final status; either method can lose the race to settlement.
The key is timing: cancel as soon as you decide to withdraw an order, then verify its status rather than assuming the request stopped solver execution immediately.
