Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade goes live on Sepolia

Glamsterdam had been scheduled for Sepolia; on Tuesday, Oct. 6, Ethereum’s upgrade went live on the testnet, putting its changes to block production and validation into public testing. The Ethereum Foundation’s activation schedule set the fork for epoch 353,024, slot 11,296,768, at 13:53:36 UTC. Cointelegraph reported that community contributor Pooja Ranjan announced the launch.

What changes did Glamsterdam bring to Sepolia?

The testnet upgrade introduces enshrined proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists and revised gas pricing, according to the Foundation. With enshrined proposer-builder separation, the handoff between block builders and proposers moves into Ethereum’s protocol. Block-level access lists record the accounts and storage locations used in a block, allowing clients to read state and validate transactions in parallel. That testing matters because the changes are designed to support greater Layer 1 throughput while keeping block validation practical.

Glamsterdam also changes gas accounting to better reflect execution and state growth. The Foundation says contracts that depend on fixed gas stipends, hardcoded gas limits or assumptions about remaining gas may need changes. The Sepolia launch gives developers a place to check how applications behave under those rules before any mainnet activation.

What happens next for node operators and mainnet?

The Sepolia fork is a testnet milestone; the Foundation says dates for Hoodi and mainnet have not yet been decided. Before activation, it told Sepolia operators to prepare by:

  1. Updating both execution-layer and consensus-layer clients to versions that support the fork.
  2. If running a validator, updating both the beacon node and validator client.
  3. Reviewing client guidance for new proposer-builder duties and related tooling.

For you as an Ethereum mainnet user or ETH holder, the Foundation says this Sepolia announcement requires no action. Developers still need to set and announce separate activation dates before Glamsterdam reaches Hoodi or mainnet.
