JPM Coin had been available on Base since November 2025; on Oct. 19, JPMorgan announced it had brought the dollar deposit token to Ethereum for institutional clients. The move lets eligible clients transfer a representation of their bank deposits across more of the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem, according to The Block’s report on JPMorgan’s announcement.
What does JPM Coin represent on Ethereum?
JPM Coin, also called JPMD, represents existing U.S. dollar deposits at JPMorgan; it is a deposit token rather than a claim that the bank has put ordinary cash onchain. The bank says the token enables institutional clients to make onchain payments. The Ethereum expansion supports peer-to-peer transfers within the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem, including between Ethereum and Base, the network where JPM Coin first launched.
For you, the distinction is that Ethereum’s public blockchain records the token transfers, while the token itself represents a deposit held at the bank. The announcement does not say that the token is open to retail users.
How does the expansion change the transfer route?
The confirmed mechanism is a short sequence:
- JPM Coin represents a client’s existing dollar deposit at JPMorgan.
- Institutional clients use the token for peer-to-peer transfers within the Ethereum Virtual Machine ecosystem.
- With the Ethereum addition, that ecosystem includes both Ethereum and Base.
JPMorgan said Ethereum’s depth of onchain liquidity and tokenized assets made it a natural next public blockchain for JPM Coin. That gives institutional clients another network for moving the bank’s deposit token alongside onchain assets; the bank has not announced broader public access.
Where does this fit in JPMorgan’s blockchain business?
The expansion builds on the bank’s existing blockchain activity. The Block reported that Kinexys, JPMorgan’s blockchain platform, had processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions and averaged $7 billion in daily transaction volume, according to the bank’s Monday statement. Those figures describe the platform overall, not JPM Coin alone.
