Portal Bridge Redemption Recovery: How the Claim Works

Portal Bridge redemption recovery is the manual destination-chain claim for a transfer that did not finish automatically. Your source-chain transaction may already be final, but the destination claim can still be waiting. For Wormhole token transfers, recovery uses that source transaction to find the message and submit its signed attestation on the destination chain. Portal Bridge’s name appears at portalbridge.app, while the source-chain record shows whether the transfer was actually initiated.

What does Portal Bridge redemption recovery do?

It completes the destination step of an eligible transfer; it does not reverse or repeat the source transaction. In a standard Wormhole token transfer, Guardians attest to the source-chain event, producing a signed message called a VAA. The destination bridge uses that message to release or mint the corresponding asset when the claim is redeemed. If automatic completion stalls, manual recovery helps you submit the destination claim yourself.

Before you start, have these details ready:

  • The source chain and its transaction hash.
  • The destination chain and the receiving wallet.
  • Some of the destination chain’s native token for gas, if the claim requires a wallet transaction.

How do you recover a stuck Portal Bridge transfer?

Start by checking the source transaction in that chain’s explorer. A failed source transaction did not initiate the transfer, so there is no destination claim to recover. If it succeeded, use Portal’s resume or recovery flow to look up the transaction and continue the redemption.

  1. Copy the transaction hash from the confirmed source-chain transaction.
  2. Open Portal’s recovery flow, choose the source chain if asked, and enter the hash.
  3. Check that the displayed destination and receiving address match your transfer.
  4. Connect the intended destination wallet and approve the claim, including its destination-chain gas fee.

The destination transaction should then appear on its own chain’s explorer. If the message is not ready, wait for source-chain finality and try again; a pending attestation cannot be redeemed yet. Recovery depends on the transfer type: for some CCTP transfers, the original app or contract alone can complete the claim. Portal’s documentation says a non-zero destination_caller in the source transaction’s events can indicate that restriction.

When does manual redemption make sense?

Use it when the source transaction succeeded but the destination step remains incomplete. It is not a general refund mechanism, and recovery cannot fix a wrong recipient or make a failed source transaction valid. For most users, the clearest test is simple: confirm the source transaction, verify the destination details, then submit only the matching claim. A completed source transfer and a completed destination redemption are separate steps, so check both before treating the funds as available.
