Starknet weighs L1 move as STRK rises 20%
Starknet is weighing an Ethereum exit to pursue quantum resistance by 2027, while STRK rose about 20% in 24 hours; no move has been approved yet.

Starknet said it is actively considering becoming an independent layer 1, a shift it says could help it pursue full quantum resistance by 2027. Until this week, it operated as an Ethereum layer 2, settling state data there.
In its report on Starknet’s announcement, Decrypt said STRK traded around $0.073 on Friday, up about 20% in 24 hours. Starknet’s stated target is to become the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027; that is a target for quantum resistance, not a confirmed date for an L1 launch.
Why is Starknet considering leaving Ethereum?
The idea is tied to control over security upgrades. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson raised the possibility on Oct. 8, pointing to quantum computing and advances in AI as reasons chains may need to adapt their cryptography. As an L2, Starknet depends on Ethereum for parts of its security, so its own quantum protections do not remove every dependency on the base chain.
What would change under the existing roadmap?
Starknet has not announced transition steps. Its published post-quantum roadmap instead lays out work on the current network, including:
- Replacing Pedersen hashing with BLAKE2 and adopting post-quantum consensus signatures such as Falcon-512.
- Migrating existing contracts.
- Addressing Ethereum-dependent bridge messaging and blob data availability as Ethereum’s migration progresses.
Those phases come from the roadmap covered by Unchained, which says it did not mention becoming an L1. Starknet has not said whether or when it will decide on the idea.
Has Starknet approved the move?
No. The network is considering the change, and any protocol-level changes require governance approval, according to Unchained. For you as a reader or STRK holder, that distinction matters: the announcement sets out a possible direction, while a decision and implementation plan remain unconfirmed.
